From the ninth and final installment to the most influential saga in cinematic history to a 3-and-a-half-hour gangster epic from Martin Scorsese... here are my most anticipated films of the final two months of 2019.
It has been too long since I have been able to commit to writing full reviews for each of the films I have seen over the past eight weeks or so, so I thought I would give my summarised thoughts for all of them here in this one post. Awards season is going to be packed so I want to be all caught up.
Now that we have seen the reactions from the major films at Venice and Toronto, these are my current predictions for the above-the-line categories at the Oscars 2020. Subject to change.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywoodis written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.
In Quentin Tarantino's ninth and reportedly penultimate film, set in 1969 Hollywood, aging TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) along with his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) try to navigate a changing Hollywood film industry all while living next door to rising star Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie).
The Lion King is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Donald Glover, Beyonce Knowles-Carter and James Earl-Jones.
Based on the 1994 animated phenomenon, The Lion King tells the story of a young lion prince who flees his kingdom following the murder of his Father, only to learn the true meaning of responsibility, freedom and leadership.
Toy Story 4 is directed by Josh Cooley and stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.
Animation/Comedy/Drama/Adventure. Released 2019.
I think we can all agree that there were many people questioning the actual existence of this film, thanks to the most perfect trilogy finale that was 2010's Toy Story 3, one of the greatest animated films to ever be made, if not the greatest. So, is Toy Story 4 completely necessary?
Shortly after the world being graced with Endgame fever, Marvel Studios kicks their promotional campaign for their next billion-dollar picture into full gear.
This trailer review will contain Avengers: Endgame spoilers.
I think we can all agree that even though the Walt Disney Company is an absolute powerhouse and is responsible for the majority of beloved modern blockbuster content, with the acquisition of FOX, it is just about to be so much bigger.
It was recently reported that Jennifer Lawrence will be returning to the screen after her sabbatical to star in an untitled, A24-distributed drama. It is directed by acclaimed stage director, but first-time film director, Lila Neugebauer. The screenplay is also written by first-timer Elizabeth Sanders.
Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been so confidential, but now we have concluded the Infinity Saga, it is time to theorise the next chapter, firstly predicting which films will land which release dates.
Avengers: Endgame is directed by Joe & Anthony Russo and stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth.
Superhero/Fantasy/Sci-Fi. Released 2019.
It is, arguably, the most anticipated film of all time. The epic finale to the most successful franchise ever made, Marvel's 'Infinity Saga', the first chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's this generations Return Of The King, The Deathly Hallows or Return Of The Jedi, except this concludes a decade-long journey of 22 films. This is the event that film-lovers have been waiting for since 2008.
With Endgame just around the corner, I thought I would round up my thoughts on the rest of Marvel's Infinity Saga by ranking all of the films with a percentage score. This will likely be said plenty of times on this blog in the next few days but wow, what a great run this has been; this is an unprecedented achievement which I don't know will ever be re-created to this level. This saga, even without the defining chapter, has revolutionised blockbuster filmmaking - and I'm sure Endgame will only act as further evidence of this fact.
This is going to be one huge Summer, and most of it is thanks to Disney. However, there are plenty of other films to get excited for as well, and I am going to cover my predictions for these films' box office performance. And, just like every year, we kick start the Summer movie season with what is usually Marvel's biggest film of the year, if not of their entire cinematic universe.
Baz Luhrmann is, in my opinion, one of the most exciting directors in the industry, and he has not released a feature film since 2013's The Great Gatsby (one of my favourite films, as seen in my 'All Time Favourites' list in the sidebar). This recently occurred to me and I have been eagerly awaiting for an announcement like this to be made. I have really admired Luhrmann's stylistic choices, to take classic stories or properties - which in their original form are incredibly timeless - and adapt them into a somewhat modern take, but still embodying the tone. It's a peculiar blend, but a distinctive one, establishing Baz Luhrmann as a true auteur filmmaker.
If you're reading this and haven't got your Endgame tickets yet, then please book your tickets and come back after. This film is on fire, breaking records, breaking the internet, and - already - breaking hearts. It is one huge event.
