The odds are in Lionsgate's favour. And in mine :)
It was recently announced that Suzanne Collins, author of the generation-defining Hunger Games series, will be returning to a Panem sixty years prior to Katniss Everdeen's rebellion.
When asked about the prequel, Collins said this:
'With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival. The reconstruction period ten years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days - as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet - provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define these views of humanity.'
Since the grand finale, The Hunger Games: Mockinjay - Part Two hit our screens back in 2015, Lionsgate has evidently been struggling to find their next big franchise, with John Wick seeming to be their only contender (a worthy contender after the surprising success of Parabellum, I might add). It is not surprising that Lionsgate is eagerly anticipating the release of this novel in order to go into production seemingly right away.
The chairman of the Lionsgate motion picture group, Joe Drake, had this to say on the project:
'As the proud home of The Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne's next book to be published. We've been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie.'
It seems like something would have to go seriously wrong for this project to be cut, and I cannot wait to hear of more developments. There are so many questions to ask; Will it become a franchise? Who will play the lead? Will Francis Lawrence return to direct? I cannot wait - The Hunger Games is one of my all-time favourite franchises and played a big part between the age of 10 and 14. And now, it's returning.
