Is this film EVER going to see the light of day?
As part of Disney's updated release schedule, we were given some more news concerning Avatar. Originally announced to be released in 2014, James Cameron's Avatar 2 - with the exception of anything Star Wars related - is probably the longest-awaited sequel ever. Since being announced for release in 2014, Avatar 2 has been slated for 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and now, December 2021 - something rather infuriating for me as such a fan of James Cameron's original masterpiece. It was getting to be so close, but now, so far. Starting from December 2021, the Avatar franchise will continue to be released every other December through to 2027. Although frustrating as a fan, it is encouraging that they seem to have more of a solid plan with regard to their release strategy.
The alternating December weekends are going to be what seems to be a new Star Wars trilogy from Game Of Thrones creators, Benioff and Weiss, rumoured to be set during the reign of the Old Republic as opposed to being a predictable Episode X, XI and XII. These three films will be released in every December we are not getting an Avatar film - 2022, 2024 and 2026. This strategy is quite satisfying, promising us a huge cinematic event every December (it seems like Disney is taking a small break in 2020 after what will likely be the highest grossing year in film of all time) and promising every year to close with a bang. I am glad there will be a three-year wait for another Star Wars film after The Rise Of Skywalker, because I think Star Wars is at the risk of becoming oversaturated. Also, it looks like Lucasfilm will be preoccupied with Indiana Jones 5, scheduled for release in 2021.
While it is frustrating that Avatar has been delayed once again, it is surprisingly making me feel slightly more comfortable about how Disney feels about the property, seemingly putting it on par with Star Wars. This has, in no way, made me lose faith in James Cameron. Never underestimate him.
