Trailer Review | The Lion King 2019

I still can't quite believe the magnitude of Disney's 2019 slate.

The photo-realistic CGI remake of, in my opinion, the greatest animated film of all time is only a matter of months away, and this trailer seemed to give us a pretty good indication and what is in store for us.

This is exactly what I wanted.

What really resonates with me is that through this trailer, Disney seems to be so aware of the grandeur of this iconic story, and the legacy it has endured for almost three decades, and they have capitalised on this. It is grand, epic and sweeping and induces chills, a testament to the incredibly strong nostalgia factor associated with the 1994 classic. The music, although not even including any of the music which was a major factor of its gargantuan success, still brings you back to the wonderful Hans Zimmer score, a score which I didn't realise I had such a sentimental attachment to until this trailer.

What I was worried they would push heavily in the advertising campaign were the leading members of the voice cast, Donald Glover/Childish Gambino and Beyoncé Knowles Carter. However, we haven't heard an ounce of them and have only seen a few moments with their characters, the matured Nala and Simba. The fact that this trailer has the ability to move me on such a level without the inclusion of these two members of the voice cast is a testament to the heroic and beautiful story as well as the seemingly impeccable work by Jon Favreau, a director I certainly trust in making this kind of film due to the triumphant success of 2016's The Jungle Book

And I haven't even commented on the visual effects because when watching the trailer I forgot they were visual effects, they are just that flawless. This is an animated film. The entire film is visual effects. And the 2020 Academy Award for Achievement in Visual Effects goes to...

On a serious note, however, I genuinely wonder how far this film could go during awards season.
