Following her Oscar-nominated role in A Star Is Born and her Oscar win for the iconic song Shallow, the film industry has been eagerly waiting to see what role modern icon Lady Gaga will tackle next. I've been vouching for her to take up the role of Ursula in Disney's The Little Mermaid remake opposite Halle Bailey, but that predictably went to Melissa McCarthy. I have also loved the idea of her in Universal's adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked, which, I guess we will have to wait and see. Maybe that could still happen.
However, none of those possibilities can top this project. Along with Babylon and Zelda, this is my most anticipated film in development. Deadline reports:
Ridley Scott has committed to direct a film about the tumultuous Gucci family fashion dynasty and the murder of the grandson of the founder Guccio Gucci. Lady Gaga is attached to star as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband's assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. She served 18 years in prison before being let out in 2016.
This role is absolutely perfect for Lady Gaga's sophomore feature film. It seems she is eyeing Oscar gold more than box office stardom, but what's exciting is that A Star Is Born was a phenomenon, primarily because of the music and her pitch-perfect on-screen chemistry with Bradley Cooper. It was a box office juggernaut, and Lady Gaga was the primary draw. If she continues down this path of artistic, character-driven projects that are ambitious enough to be produced by a Hollywood studio but don't need any franchise recognition, Lady Gaga could be on track to become an ageless Hollywood icon. Over a decade into her career, it feels like it is only the beginning.
Even without Gaga, the exotic Italian appeal and the true-crime genre is enough to get me on board. Ridley Scott is a very busy filmmaker, his last true triumph being The Martian in 2015. He has several projects on his agenda, but I hope this one gets the fast-track - it would be silly for them to not strike while the iron's hot where Gaga is concerned. The future is bright. If this meets expectations, it will be incredible. Lady Gaga is a powerhouse and will never cease to amaze. She is a true star.
