ENDGAME Shatters Opening Weekend Records

I guess this isn't really a surprise.

Weekend Box Office: 26th April-28th April 2019
  1. Avengers: Endgame - $350million
  2. Captain Marvel - $8.05million
  3. The Curse Of La Llarona - $7.5million
  4. Breakthrough - $6.3million
  5. Shazam! - $5.5million

ENDGAME GLOBAL DEBUT:  $1.2 BILLION

As I said, the fact that Endgame has absolutely decimated every record previously held by The Force Awakens and Infinity War is not a surprise - the surprise is how much by. The previous opening worldwide opening weekend record was held by Endgame's predecessor, Infinity War, with $640million. Endgame's global debut has almost DOUBLED the previously held feat, and deservedly so. In regards to domestic opening weekends, the previous record was also held by Infinity War with $257million. It was universally agreed that Endgame would surpass this number, but there was a question mark as to whether it would power through to the $300million mark, and, as we can see, it did just that. Not only did it pass $300million, but it is half way to $400million. Many questioned as to whether this was even possible.

Here is the rundown of the major new records set by AVENGERS: ENDGAME:

- Worldwide Opening Weekend - $1.2billion
Previously held by Infinity War's $640million.

- Domestic Opening Weekend - $350million
Previously held by Infinity War's $257million
These numbers also apply to the highest Spring opening and the highest April opening of all time.

- Foreign Opening Weekend - $859million
Previously held by The Fate Of The Furious's $443million

- Highest Single-Day Gross: Friday 26th - $156.7million
Previously held by The Force Awakens's $119million
This number also applies to the highest-grossing Friday of all time.

- Highest Saturday Gross - $109million
Previously held by Infinity War's $82million

- Highest Sunday Gross - $84.3million
Previously held by Infinity War's $69.2million

- Highest Theatre Average - $75,075
Previously held by The Force Awakens's $59,982

So, it looks like there's no question that domestically, Avengers: Endgame is going to become the highest grossing film of all time, likely becoming the first film to surpass $1billion, unseating The Force Awakens as the champion.

The real question is, will it surpass Avatar's seemingly untouchable $2.7billion? If you had asked me a few months ago, my response would have been that it won't, but with its $1.2billion debut, it is almost halfway there, which is insane. Infinity War went on to multiply its box office opening by over three times, so if Endgame was to do this, it would secure that title comfortably, potentially even crossing the $3billion mark. However, there is a strong possibility that this film will be very front-loaded, with everyone rushing out to see the film as soon as humanly possible to avoid spoilers, potentially with a considerable second-weekend drop on the horizon. Even though this is the case, there seems to be many, many people with an immediate urge to see the film again and again - I have seen it four times, and I am sure that that fourth time will not be my last. Much like everyone else, I am not done with Endgame quite yet, and I will refuse to move on. What a monumental, historic weekend this is for the film industry.

A small side-note: How great that Marvel Studios occupy both the Number 1 and 2 spots this weekend - I am still over the moon that Captain Marvel has done so spectacularly. I think it is quite hilarious that for a continuous decade, thousands have stated that there is 'superhero-movie-fatigue', even when 3 out of the top 5 at this weekend's box office are superhero films.
