2020 Pixar Preview: ‘Onward’ and ‘Soul’

2020 seems like a return to form for Pixar.
In light of the much anticipated release of Toy Story 4, I thought I would take a look at what Pixar has on the horizon. For fans of the studio, it is immensely exciting that we will be getting two original animated films in 2020, the first time since 2015 where we have gotten two Pixar films in one year with neither of them being sequels (2015 being Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur). Disney Animation was no stranger to this either, releasing both Moana and Zootopia in 2016 - one of the iconic studio's best years in recent memory, creating two instant Disney classics.

While 2019 is the year of monumental finales, revivals, remakes and sequels, 2020 seems to be the year of original blockbuster content, which is an exciting concept. And, as previously discussed, Pixar is no exception to this rule, with the release of Onward and Soul.

Onward

Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there in order to spend one last day with their father.

Since watching the trailer for the first time, in all honesty, it has not been revisited, but I never tend to find that Pixar trailers are particularly impactful unless they are rooted in nostalgia, but, at least with concern to me, it does not matter, because - with the exception of Cars - they've already sold me and I am there opening weekend. So far, this feels oddly inconsistent with Pixar's brand; it feels a bit more like a DreamWorks or Blue Sky film, but I trust Pixar unconditionally. They barely, if ever, have a misstep. Besides the fact that it is Pixar, the main attraction to Onward is obviously the voice cast, with Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Octavia Spencer, oddly star-studded for an animated film. Also, judging by the subject matter, it seems like there is a silent promise that Onward will make everyone cry.

Soul

A journey from the streets of New York City to cosmic realms, discovering the answers to life's most important questions.

The aesthetic of the logo and the brief synopsis already feels like a companion piece to Inside Out, not to mention that Soul is being written and directed by Pete Docter... the writer/director of Inside Out and Up, two of the greatest Pixar films. We know very little about Soul thus far, but I already have an instinct that it will be the more profound and powerful of the two films, and will probably garner the most acclaim... I'm pretty sure it already has that 2021 Best Animated Feature Oscar.
