Trailer Review | Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil

Angelina Jolie returns as the iconic Disney villain.
With Disney's crowded slate of films in development, I was surprised to see that the sequel to 2014's Maleficent had turned out as one of their priorities, due to the fact that they didn't strike while the iron was hot when it came to the great success of the first film. However, it makes sense for them to continue - and most likely conclude - the reimagined story of what can be argued as Disney's most iconic villain.

Unsurprisingly, the film looks utterly stunning, with beautifully sinister imagery. It seems to tonally embody the original character of Maleficent from the 1959 classic moreso than its predecessor. This trailer is visually enthralling, and everything I would want from a dark fairy tale epic... and yes, it does feel epic... there is a lot of grandeur in its scope as well as the chilling gravitas of Angelina Jolie, who is evidently committing to this role just as much as the first film, which is a great sign. What really excites me is the fact that Maleficent seems to be turning genuinely evil, and the majority of criticism towards the previous film was that she was far too sympathetic, even when she had turned 'evil'. If they commit to a wholly evil Maleficent, I think they could stick the landing and potentially course correct the issues with the first film.

I was not particularly excited for Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil, but having seen this trailer, I am won over - it reminded me of the sheer excellence of Jolie's iconic 2014 performance, and five years later, it seems like she still has it.
