Cruella (Disney) - Dec. 23, 2020
Within this updated schedule, we are given a few more announcements with regard to release dates, two of which I want to discuss. I am excited to report that Steven Spielberg's West Side Story starring Ansel Elgort has finally been given the perfectly placed release date of December 18th, 2020. This puts it in the Mary Poppins Returns position, a prime spot for awards season but also give it box office potential to be a holiday event film. Hopefully it has a different fate than that film, though. This release date should be exciting for Ansel Elgort since he is headlining two films that are in prime contention for awards season, this year's The Goldfinch and of course, next year's West Side Story.
The other title I want to discuss is the 101 Dalmations spin-off Cruella, starring Emma Stone, releasing December 23, 2020, just a few days after West Side Story. I was at a point where I wondered whether this film would ever get made, but thankfully it is coming to our screens at the end of next year. It is a foregone conclusion that Emma Stone will get yet another Golden Globe nom for performance by an actress in a musical or comedy... Will it just be a comedy? Or will there be original music written? Information I'm sure we will hear in the next year or so. It has been a while since Emma Stone has been involved with a huge studio film, her last undeniable blockbuster being The Amazing Spider Man 2 back in 2014. Of course, even though she's an Oscar winner, this could be a career-defining role for Emma Stone, much like Angelina Jolie's incarnation of Maleficent.
