There is no question that the only true victorious studio here is Disney, dominating the entire top half of the chart, including the Disney-associated Far From Home.
Avengers: Endgame. Not only the biggest film of the summer; the biggest film of the year; the biggest film of the decade; the biggest film of the century; but the biggest film of ALL TIME. And, deservedly so. What Marvel Studios has achieved with the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, THE INFINITY SAGA, is truly one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time in the way that it has revolutionised blockbuster filmmaking and impacted pop culture as a whole, and Avengers: Endgame deserves the crown. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' latest film about the world's favourite web-slinger also became the highest grossing Spider-Man film of all time, and even more impressively, the most successful film in the history of Sony Pictures.
Disney's live action remakes most certainly will not be slowing down either, thanks to the predictably record-breaking success of Jon Favreau's The Lion King, making it Walt Disney Pictures' highest-grossing film of all time, and Guy Ritchie's Aladdin remake overcoming all the online negativity by pleasing audiences and earning a very well deserved position in the billion-dollar-club. Pixar also returned this Summer with the not insanely anticipated yet still insanely anticipated sequel, and most likely the conclusion to their crown jewel franchise with Toy Story 4. As some (including me) was expecting, it did not manage to surpass Incredibles 2 as the highest grossing animated film of all time, but it came close enough and still is a huge success, making it the highest-grossing film in the Toy Story franchise domestically, and the 5th highest-grossing animated film ever made. Whoever considers this to be a failure needs to open their eyes.
Almost half a billion dollars down the chart, Hobbs & Shaw isn't a failure, but no doubt a disappointment. With the two most recent entries in the Fast & Furious franchise very comfortably sat in the billion dollar club, this would've been expected to do similar business, or close enough, especially since this entry is headed up by the two most popular characters in the franchise. With Vin Diesel being a huge star in China and Dwayne Johnson being a huge draw to American audiences, the box office numbers are beginning to make sense because of the diminishing returns from the American box office for even the most successful entries in this franchise. With China being this franchise's saviour for the past couple of years, it is starting to make sense that this audience wouldn't be as interested in Hobbs & Shaw due to the absence of Vin Diesel.
Both Pokemon Detective Pikachu and The Secret Life Of Pets 2 have also produced surprisingly underwhelming box office numbers this years. With Pets being the sequel to its $800million grossing predecessor and consistent with the quality of said predecessor, it seems like the only explanation of its lower-than-expected results is the fact that Toy Story 4 came along far too quickly and stole away the audiences that would've otherwise seen The Secret Life Of Pets 2. As for Pokemon Detective Pikachu, it seems that mediocre reviews for a film attached to the biggest IP in the world simply doesn't guarantee huge success anymore. In 9th place, with expectations of $800million+, what seemed to be the eagerly anticipated sequel to Godzilla didn't even manage to reach half of that. Again, mediocre reviews just don't seem to cut it anymore. I am certainly intrigued to see what Godzilla Vs. Kong achieves next year.
On a brighter note, the third entry of the excellent John Wick franchise, Parabellum, shattered every box office expectation, almost doubling the performance of its predecessor and guaranteeing the eagerly anticipated sequel to the Keanu-led gripping action masterwork.
What a huge summer it has been for film... well, Disney.
