It is, arguably, the most anticipated film of all time. The epic finale to the most successful franchise ever made, Marvel's 'Infinity Saga', the first chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's this generations Return Of The King, The Deathly Hallows or Return Of The Jedi, except this concludes a decade-long journey of 22 films. This is the event that film-lovers have been waiting for since 2008.
After the devastating events of Infinity War, the remaining Avengers assemble once more in an attempt to undo Thanos' actions and restore the universe, in the culmination of a franchise that has spanned over 22 films. I think its fair to say that there has never been more pressure riding on a film to be good. But also, I don't think there has ever been more trust between fan-and-filmmaker. There is a reason that this is the most successful film franchise ever, and its because they always deliver something satisfactory at the very least. Every single individual associated with this is absolutely deserving of their success.
Avengers: Endgame delivers on every promise and more. I can, with no hesitation, say that being at the midnight showing of this cinematic event was the single greatest experience I've had watching a film. I have never been in a crowd so invested and excited by what was happening on screen, which is all a testament to this unprecedented achievement by the Russo Brothers, Kevin Feige, and the entire cast, especially the original six. After two of many future viewings, I believe that Endgame ranks among the likes of Return Of The King as a blockbuster action masterpiece.
This began with the script, and I hope Christopher Markus and Scott McFeely are recognised for this feat, demonstrating their ability to truly close the curtain on this expansive Infinity Saga, tying up so many loose ends and delivering genuinely satisfying conclusions to the overarching, 10-year plot in an extremely smart way in addition to emotionally satisfying conclusions to the arcs of the characters we know and love - it is impossible to go into details without reaching spoiler territory... the Russos want us to go into this film completely blind.
Speaking of the characters - they will never read this - but I want to thank the original six for how they have transformed the genre and as a result, changed the course of film history, showing how this unstoppable superhero genre can show real, humane, emotional people behind their masks, shields or suits. Robert Downey Jr. is truly breathtaking here, culminating the best emotional, comedic, and epic moments for Tony Stark since 2008 to give us an iconic performance which defines his legacy. The uproarious round of applause when his name came on screen in the end credits is something I will never forget (especially since I initiated it). I really hope - and do not consider impossible - that Robert Downey Jr. will get some recognition during 2020 awards season for his achievement, something that Hugh Jackman was criminally over-looked for during 2018 awards season for his, also iconic, definitive performance in Logan.
Scarlett Johansson peels back the layers of Natasha in Endgame, and if it wasn't for Downey Jr, she would've stolen the entire first act. She will make audiences remember that she's not just an action star, but a true character actress - I was thoroughly moved by her performance, and was glad that she got the meaningful screen-time she deserved... I feel that only The Winter Soldier had really served her as a character before this film, so I thank the Russos for fleshing her out. The way this film treats Chris Evans' Steve Rogers is another call-back to The Winter Soldier, and I felt Cap's heroism and the genuine impact he has had on this franchise. After losing faith in him after Civil War, I am so thrilled that I feel more love for the character than I ever have before, delivering some of the most electrifying moments in the film... moments he earned. Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye is so riveting to watch in action and I think that he has finally got the screentime and emotional pay-off he deserves. Renner pulls off the dramatic moments flawlessly, reminding us, just like Johansson, that he is a character actor first, and an action star second. Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo deliver the comedic elements which throw us back to the earlier Marvel films, but along with the comedic moments we are given extremely surprising re-iterations of their respective characters.
In addition to the original six, Rhodey, Rocket and Scott Lang are all served well, contributing valuable comedic moments to the film, in addition to a lot of heart. Karen Gillan as Nebula is annoying and borderline pretentious, but since this is something I've grown very used to, it was and is not a detriment to the film - also, this opinion seems to be a minority. Josh Brolin's performance as Thanos solidifies him as the greatest villain of the MCU, and maybe even in the entire genre; yes, that includes Heath Ledger's Joker. In regards to Captain Marvel... I won't say too much, other than the fact that she does have some great moments.
There are some genuinely touching scenes throughout the entire runtime, and I commend the Russos for - in addition to incorporating these into the actual plot - making the result of these emotional moments one of the most emotionally satisfying films, giving honest, emotional endings for most elements of the film. I also thank the Russo Brothers for delivering the most fulfilling battle scene I have ever seen on screen, in addition with giving us the best action sequences of the MCU in their entire body of work. This is not the only impressive thing though... the Russos have been the best MCU directors of the entire saga, since they have absolutely nailed that sweet balance of being grounded, poignant, emotional, intellectual and exhilaratingly epic, with all of these elements amalgamating in this stunning and stupendous finale.
Thank you to Kevin Feige, Joe and Anthony Russo, Joss Whedon, Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. for taking this genre to new heights in this past decade. The evidence of your influence is overtly clear in this decade-defining superhero masterpiece.
There is no higher praise. What a magnificent achievement.
