Shortly after the world being graced with Endgame fever, Marvel Studios kicks their promotional campaign for their next billion-dollar picture into full gear.
This trailer review will contain Avengers: Endgame spoilers.
Prefaced with a warning from Peter Parker himself, Tom Holland, the trailer begins with Peter Parker still grieving the loss of Father figure and mentor, Tony Stark (along with the rest of the world, both on and off-screen). This trailer immediately provoked a huge emotional response from me, and I'm sure with many others. I am - partially dreading, but - looking forward to seeing how the loss of Tony Stark has affected Peter Parker in the (somewhat) long term, on top of seeing the world having to adapt to a fully populated universe again. The premise for the personal, intimate elements of Far From Home demonstrated thus far is perfect and makes total sense from an emotional perspective, and this trailer surprisingly seems to paint this film as a direct sequel to Endgame.
It goes without saying that I am obviously looking forward to seeing the supporting cast from Homecoming back on screen... the tone of that film seems to have been completely recreated with Far From Home, although this obviously has more of a somber weight on it from the get-go. I forget how great Tom Holland is in this role - he embodies the warmth and innocence of Peter Parker so perfectly. He is, without a doubt, the best Spider-Man we've ever had. I am eagerly anticipating the role of Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio in this film as well, because I feel like he is going to have a bigger role in the MCU in the foreseeable future. And, of course, it is impossible for me not to be excited about the return of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury.
The small nod to the 'multi-verse' is something I am not going to look into too deeply, because I don't feel a need to theorize. However, I do look forward to seeing what this leads to when it comes to the actual film as well as the films to come in the future.
Something I noticed about this trailer was the heightened scale - the action set pieces look immense, and I love the notion of him touring Europe with his school. The action in Venice looks spectacular - I am looking forward to seeing the stunning scenery in the context of this film, as well as Peter Parker in London. Quite frankly, if you go to London in an action film, it is a fundamental rule to blow up Tower Bridge.
Overall, I love this trailer. It hits all the right beats in the right place at the right time. It seems like there is going to be a serious character journey for Tom Holland's Peter Parker, and I am all for it. If it is anything like Homecoming from two years ago, then I am all in. I trust this team to bring us something brilliant.
