Did Tim Burton's Dumbo fly high this weekend?
Weekend Box Office: 29th March-31st March 2019
- Dumbo - $45million
- Us - $33million
- Captain Marvel - $20.5million
- Five Feet Apart - $6.3million
- Unplanned - $6.1million
I initially would have predicted that Tim Burton's live action Dumbo would make around $60-70million on its opening weekend, but industry projections turned out to be closer to the result. Based on this number being closer to the professional predictions, Dumbo probably won't be considered to have under-performed this weekend, but I can't help but think what it could've made if the film was met with all-round positive reviews, since it turned out to be pretty mixed, many even strongly disliking it. This is unfortunate, especially for Tim Burton, because many believe that that Tim Burton 'magic' is gone, with him having not made a film met with all-round positive reception since Sweeney Todd back in 2008 (over a decade ago).
I doubt that Disney had expected this to be a box office smash on the same level as their upcoming Aladdin or Lion King films, but I'm sure they may have wanted a number with a bit more grandeur than $45million. In addition to the reviews being mixed, my theory is that plenty of audience members, when given the choice between Dumbo and Us, chose for the latter, either because of the infectious buzz and theories surrounding the film, or they had seen it the first week and had that inevitable urge to re-watch it. Who would ever think that an original, $20million horror film would take money out of a Disney film, especially one as recognisable as Dumbo?
Speaking of Us, it continues to do incredibly well. With just a 52% drop from first weekend to second weekend, it has now surpassed the century mark with a grand domestic total of $128million, nearing $200million worldwide. I believe my aforementioned theories to be correct. There is no stopping Jordan Peele.
I think a lot of us had hoped for Captain Marvel to finally hit that momentous billion-dollar mark this weekend, but it ended up just shy of that, with a worldwide total of $990million. Its a foregone conclusion that it will reach $1bn any day now. What an utterly spectacular result.
