This weekend's box office numbers are in. Did Captain Marvel survive?
Weekend Box Office: 8th March 2019-10th March 2019
- Captain Marvel - $153 million
- The Hidden World - $14.7 million
- A Madea Family Funeral - $12 million
- The Lego Movie 2 - $3.8 million
- Alita: Battle Angel - $3.2 million
I am thrilled to report that Captain Marvel absolutely dominated this weekend, demonstrating its power to completely overshadow all of the toxic controversy surrounding it. Captain Marvel's absolutely huge opening weekend makes it the third biggest all-time opening weekend for a March film release, along with it being the 6th biggest global opening of all time, opening to $456.7million around the world, which is a pretty large feat, only behind The Deathly Hallows, Jurassic World, The Force Awakens, The Fate Of The Furious, and of course, Infinity War.
Since the vast majority of the biggest global openers have eventually gone on to reach the billion-dollar mark, and Captain Marvel is in the top tier of this list, this leaves us to question: will it go the distance and reach $1billion? I have a good feeling it will due to the overall global performance, which is incredibly exciting. It is likely we will have a better idea once we see how its done on its second weekend to see if it has staying power or if it will suffer a big drop.
Lesson learnt from this weekend: Marvel Studios is simply invincible. Review for Captain Marvel coming tomorrow.
