Disney has finally released a substantial look at their upcoming live-action Aladdin film, due to be released May 24, 2019. Click the image to watch the trailer below.
I haven't really known what to expect from this Aladdin film, which is quite rare since Disney's new phase of live action fantasies have been pretty easy to predict... not story-wise, but tonally and stylistically. However, with Guy Ritchie helming this spectacle, it has made me anxiously wonder whether Disney would adapt to Guy Ritchie's formula, or whether Guy Ritchie would have to adapt to Disney's formula... and I believe that, after seeing this trailer, they have reached a compromise. I would have hoped for the latter result, however.
There are several elements that excite me... Will Smith's Genie looks spectacular, thankfully over-coming the controversial reaction to the 'Special Look' teaser - it definitely looks like he could be the stand out. However, from what I've seen, Jafar is not menacing enough and Aladdin is not rugged enough. So far, Jasmine is coming off the best, with the least to work with, but some great moments, e.g. when she's walking down royal steps as well as the A Whole New World moment.
I think there is enough promise here for this to go as audiences want, so far, even though there is potential for tremendous spectacle in this trailer, it doesn't yet feel as sweeping and cinematic as say, Beauty & The Beast, which is what I would've hoped for - the world doesn't feel large enough yet. But again, there is still potential.
Also, a moment to appreciate the new poster:
It's rather stunning.
