The box office numbers are here... was Captain Marvel a one-weekend wonder or does it have staying power?
- Captain Marvel - $69.3million
- Wonder Park - $16million
- Five Feet Apart - $13.2million
- The Hidden World - $9.3million
- Madea Family Funeral - $8million
I will just get this out of the way before I talk about Captain Marvel; I am very surprised about both the positioning and the opening weekend performance of Wonder Park and Five Feet Apart, since I would have expected them to open much lower, considering lack of buzz surrounding both films.
With Captain Marvel having been released for two weekends now, its current box office numbers most certainly indicate that it is a film with serious staying power, which is simply great news. It took a very minimal 55% drop from first to second weekend which is further evidence to support this, bringing it's domestic total to $266million, clearly well on its way to 300. It has reached a grand worldwide total of a huge $760million and I would say it is almost inevitable that we will see Captain Marvel in the same league as Black Panther, Civil War, Iron Man 3 and the elite Avengers franchise in terms of reaching the coveted billion-dollar mark, which will make it only the second non-sequel in the MCU to do so, of course sharing that title with Black Panther.
I believe that these stellar numbers are a result of millions going back for second or third viewings as well as plenty of people catching on to the infectious word-of-mouth and going to see for themselves. I am very happy to say that I went back to view it a second time and enjoyed it a considerable amount more, and I couldn't be happier for its undeniable, resounding success.
