This weekend's box office numbers are in.
It has been a foregone conclusion since this film was announced that Us was going to do well, following the surprising success of Get Out, so the real question was, how well will it do? And finally, we have the answer.
Weekend Box Office: 22nd March 2019-24th March 2019
- Us - $70.25million
- Captain Marvel - $35million
- Wonder Park - $9million
- Five Feet Apart - $8.8million
- The Hidden World - $6.5million
The opening weekend box office numbers for Us are blatant proof that Jordan Peele is in the same club as Nolan, in the way that Peele's name being attached to a project will attract millions-of-dollars worth of audience members. Even with a big name like Lupita Nyong'o leading the cast, the close association to Get Out was what likely attracted most of the audience, since - even though Nyong'o is very recognisable, since she has appeared in major films like Black Panther, her last genuinely notable piece of work was her Oscar-winning performance in 12 Years A Slave, and, astonishingly, Us marks Nyong'o's first leading role.
Us's $70million opening is a record-breaking number, making it the highest opening weekend for an original horror film, and the 3rd biggest for any horror film, only behind It and 2018's long-anticipated Halloween sequel. I am thrilled that having only made two films, Jordan Peele as a director is already a draw in himself, supported by the immense critical acclaim Us is receiving.
Also, a small shoutout to Captain Marvel, having crossed the $300m domestic mark and the $900m worldwide mark, with it inevitably crossing $1b within the next 7 days. What a start to the year... two immensely successful and universally enjoyed genre films.
