Film Review | The Nun

The Nun is directed by Corin Hardy and stars Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir.
Released 2018. Horror, Mystery, Thriller.
Having seen and enjoyed The Conjuring 2, I was very excited about the announcement that we would be getting an Annabelle-style spin off film for the Nun who lightly featured in the 2016 horror hit. The concept of finding out the past of the Nun was very appealing to me and many others. So, after two years of anticipation, has the wait paid off?

Not particularly. This film is disappointing and forgettable, and there isn't really much to be further discussed.

It is evident by the mere 96-minute runtime that the writing team have struggled to put together a rich backstory for The Nun, because I am struggling to recall much beyond a few jump scares and a couple of sequences.

Jump scares which, with dozens of attempts, didn't deliver. Only twice did I jump even remotely - this is down to the poor story and how the film fails to get the audience emotionally invested, therefore making only the superficial jump scares have an effect, somewhat.

The performances are just okay. I am a big fan of Taissa Farmiga due to her early work on American Horror Story, but the script doesn't allow her to really utilise her capability.  The rest of the supporting cast are all incredibly forgettable and I felt no attachment to any of the characters.

The visuals are compelling, however. The Romanian architecture combined with the big, Cathedral manor house made for some visually exciting scenes, regardless of what was actually happening. There is a good balance of visual effects and practical effects, which was an effective balance, not making it look too superficial but still warranting the big screen. This really came into play in the film's climax, which was a highlight for me; it definitely stood out above the rest.
A forgettable chapter in The Conjuring
cinematic universe, but the visuals make it
somewhat worth going.

If you are invested in this franchise, still go and support it.
You'll have an okay time.
