Film Review | Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns is directed by Rob Marshall and stars Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda.
Musical, Family, Fantasy. Released 2018.
During a difficult time in the lives of the Banks 'children', the legendary, magical nanny Mary Poppins returns to visit them after several decades.

Against all odds, Mary Poppins Returns manages to overcome expectations and be a wonderful, timeless film. I left feeling very satisfied, with it achieving exactly what it had intended.

Emily Blunt is magnificent filling the shoes of the living legend, Julie Andrews, and her performance here is truly worthy of an Oscar nomination. She embodies the strict, yet cheerful, yet nurturing nature of the character, and is the highlight of the film. In addition, her voice is made for this. Its wonderful. I think its about time Blunt gets some genuine recognition from the Academy.

The supporting cast deliver stellar performances with the stand-out supporter being Lin Manuel-Miranda, opening the film and setting a playful and glorious tone for the rest of it, his jovial nature juxtaposing the no-nonsense Mary Poppins.

Manuel-Miranda also delivers a very strong soundtrack - it’s not the most memorable, but when watching the film it feels very organic and fits the tone perfectly. The musical numbers are quite spectacular... most notably ‘Lovely London Sky’, ‘Can You Imagine That?’, and ‘Cover Is Not The Book’, and ‘Tip A Little Light Fantastic’. What I was pleasantly surprised at is the fact that they chose to be quite experimental in regards to the visuals in many of the numbers, something which I didn’t expect. But the risks paid off. ‘The Place Where The Lost Things Go’ is a tender, moving song and is definitely deserving of a best original song nomination.

I can imagine that Mary Poppins Returns is something easy to rewatch since it is a perfectly paced and visually exciting piece, however I personally did not leave it with an urge to watch it again. I think that what people need to know is that the film is very, very enjoyable while it lasts, and you will almost definitely leave with a smile on your face l, but the only parts of the film that are particularly noteworthy are some of the musical numbers and a wonderful starring performance.
