Top 10 Blockbusters 2017

This doesn't really need explaining... Let's get started :)
#10: IT
This film would be higher on my list if it had delivered to audiences what had been promised - maybe I just don't really get genuinely scared at films, but with the exception of the opening scene in the drain (we all know what I'm talking about), I was never fearful of what was happening on screen... However, besides that, the film within itself delivers, and the strongest part of it is - without a doubt - the dynamic between the Losers. The story flowed, it felt timeless, however the lack of genuine scares was somewhat a detriment to my enjoyment of the film.

#9: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
This was a truly fantastic spectacle. As to be expected from Disney, the entire visual scope of the film was epic, and combined with the glorious musical numbers and a genuine, nuanced leading performance from Emma Watson, audiences are given a production on a spectacular scale of grandeur and beauty with a flowing pace. The only reason it hasn't received higher praise is because it is almost identical to the 1991 animated classic of the same name, only multiplied by 100 and made in live action.

#8: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI
Yes, it made it to the top ten list, but I would be lying if I said that when this film finished, I didn't walk out wishing that we got a bit more substance with lasting consequences. Yes, plenty happens, but at the same time, not much happens in regards to the effects these events will have upon the final chapter, and I still haven't had any questions answered that I have had for the past two years. That being said, however, it's Star Wars, and I had a great time whilst watching.

#7: SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
Tom Holland embodies the relatable youthfulness that allows all audiences to emotionally invest themselves in Peter Parker. No, the actual plot isn't particularly memorable, but the focus of this film are their characters, and I can't think of a single character that I didn't have some kind of strong feeling towards. Even the villain was excellently written and portrayed, which is a rarity for Marvel. This is an excellent feel-good film, all whist maintaining stakes and growing audiences' emotional investment in Tom Holland's Peter Parker even more.

#6: WONDER WOMAN
I hugely enjoyed this film. I adored the setting of the Great War as well as the stunning and sweeping visuals of Themyscira. The dynamic between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is off the charts, a major factor being - not only the stellar performances of both individuals - the genuine and at some points hilariously deadpan dialogue between the two. The third act is slightly problematic, however these problems aren't so major that they are a detriment to the rest of the film. Gadot embodies the grace and power of Diana Prince, being the quintessential face of this superhero epic which will surely go down in history.

#5: GET OUT
Upon reflection, I realised that I have never seen a film quite like Get Out, and that is truly a testament to the inventive originality of writer and director Jordan Peele. Unlike It, Get Out did scare me, not only because of the surface-level terrifying moments, but also because this film is simply a heightened portrayal of today's society, and deserves every ounce of buzz and recognition it has received... I can't wait to see more of Jordan Peele in the future.

#4: DUNKIRK
This is spectacular. Dunkirk transports you to 1940 through it's sweeping visuals and a brilliant use of sound to heighten tensions further. The opening sequence is gripping, and this mastery is maintained throughout the entire rest of the film. One slight issue that I find with Dunkirk is that I wasn't emotionally invested in all of the characters, however this is easily excused by the gorgeous cinematography and intensity of the film. Another win for Nolan.

#3: LOGAN
Full of poignancy and intimate character work, James Mangold delivers the perfect marriage of a western with a superhero film. Hugh Jackman says a final goodbye to the Wolverine by giving audiences the performance of his career and is wonderfully supported by a compelling performance from Dafne Keen, which rivals Millie Bobby Brown's 011. Dear and moving, Logan is a film to be remembered as one of the greatest superhero movies of this renaissance era.

#2: BABY DRIVER
The fastest and loudest film of the year, Baby Driver is a non-stop thrill-ride and will never fail to keep audiences engaged. From the atypical soundtrack, the fiery action scenes and the stellar leading performances given by Ansel Elgort and Lily James, Baby Driver comes together in a perfect package, splendidly put together by Edgar Wright.

#1: COCO
Coco is an immediate Pixar classic. It is a wonderfully honourable homage to Mexican culture with the backbone of the story being a monumental Mexican festival, The Day Of The Dead. Coco offers beautifully wholesome messages about the importance of family in addition with allowing audiences to lose themselves in the gorgeous scope of visuals showcased throughout, a backdrop for an incredibly emotional and gripping story. Don't let the fact that it's animated sway you into thinking that it's only for young children, because anyone can love Coco. There is no higher praise.
